What Even is Acai?

Firstly, let’s pronounce this word together. Ah-sigh-ee. Perfect! Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about what açaí is.
Acai, though it resembles the blueberry, tastes naturally more bitter – like a combination of cacao and blackberry. However, acai is actually not officially a berry as it has a pit. Still, it remains known as the “acai berry.” This antioxidant-rich fruit makes its way to us all the way from South America.
WHERE DOES ACAI COME FROM?
Acai is native to Central and South America. The acai you’ll find in your favorite Nautical Bowl is grown in the Amazon. Acai comes from an acai tree, much like a palm tree. You won’t find acai growing in climates with freezing temperatures as acai trees require a sunny, tropical climate and many years to grow.
After a few years, an acai tree produces purple flowers, meaning acai is near! Once an acai tree produces the small berry-sized fruit, it is then harvested, cleaned, blended, and transported to us!
This tiny little fruit has big benefits.

Acai is relatively new to the scene, and in the midwest, it’s pretty hard to find. Considering the shelf life of acai, we really don’t see it in its grown form.
